After breakfast at your hotel, a representative will pick you up to take to your guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage city.

DAY 4: NAZCA LINES, BALLESTA ISLANDS + PARACAS TOUR

Early in the morning a representative will pick you up to take you to Ica for your Nazca Lines overflight. You will take off for an aerial tour of UNESCO World Heritage site of the Nazca Lines. These mysterious art forms, created from tracing shallow patterns in the red desert sand, were built anywhere from BC 500 to 500 AD, but have withstood the test of time. As you gaze down on the wonders below, be sure to watch for shapes such as a monkey or hummingbird to appear on the ground!

Following your tour, you will enjoy the Paracas Bay.

You will be transported to the harbor for an adventurous 2-hour boat trip highlighting the wildlife and mystery of the Ballestas Islands.

DAY 5: AREQUIPA ARRIVAL

After breakfast at your hotel, a representative will transport you to the airport to catch your flight to Arequipa. Upon your arrival, a representative will greet you and transport you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax.

DAY 7: COLCA CANYON TO PUNO

Breakfast and Tour Transfer After breakfast, your guide will escort you on the scenic route to the stunning Cruz del Condor, known as one of the best vistas in all of Colca Canyon.

DAY 8: LAKE TITICACA & ISLANDS TOUR

Breakfast And Transfer After an early breakfast at your Puno hotel, your professional tour guide will pick you up from your hotel to begin the full-day tour of Lake Titicaca and nearby islands.

Tour Itinerary and Highlights:

  • Arrive on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world
  • Boat excursion to the Uros Floating Islands, a collection of man- made islands constructed from floating bundles of reeds
  • Leisure time to shop for souvenirs in the market, and explore these floating wonders created by the Uros tribe to defend against rival tribes
  • Two-hour boat ride across Lake Titicaca to Taquile Island, home of a Quechua community which continues the tradition of having the male residents produce fine handicrafts
  • Leisure time to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site and take in the beauty of the surrounding areas from the citadel at the island’s peak
  • Group lunch on Taquile Island
  • Return boat ride to Puno

Evening At Leisure After our return to Puno at approximately 1700h (5:00pm), the rest of the evening will be yours to discover Puno.

DAY 9: PUNO TO CUSCO

Depart Puno (7:00 am)

  • Andahuaylillas, a town that is home to the Sistene Chapel of America, a colonial church noted for its sixteenth and seventeenth century murals
  • Raqchi (Wiracocha Temple), an Incan archaeological site showcasing typical terraces, public baths, and aqueduct systems
  • Buffet lunch at small town of Sicuani, where you will enjoy Novo Andina cuisine, a pairing of meats with traditional grains and produce
  • La Raya, situated on a highland plateau (4313m or 14,147 ft.), the border town between Cusco and Puno
  • Pukara, noted for its great pyramid built by the first developed civilization in the region
  • Arrive in Cusco
  • Transfer to your hotel

DAY 10: CUSCO CITY TOUR

Breakfast and Morning at Leisure After breakfast at your hotel, a representative will pick you up to take you to your Cusco city tour.

Late Afternoon/Evening at Leisure: Suggested Activities

DAY 11: SALKANTAY DAY 1

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco from 5: 00 am to 5:30 am to go by bus to Mollepata. Begin a spectacular scenic drive through the Anta plains with beautiful and panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay and other mountains covered with snow, and the Valley of Apurimac River. After two and a half hours drive we stop in Mollepata to have breakfast for last minute supplies, leg-stretching or to use the bathrooms, before continuing to Marcocasa. There we will meet with our support staff. They will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:30 a.m. we will star our trek toward Soraypampa (3900 meters above sea level) if we keep a regular pace we will take 4 hours approximately to reach to Soraypampa the first camp site where will have lunch after lunch in the afternoon we have an option to go up to Umantay lake (4200masl) which takes 3 hours hike back and forth from the camp to see the glacier lake of Umantay. But if we keep slow pace; we will have lunch at halfway between Soraypampa and Marco Casa maybe after 3 hours of hiking. And after that we hike two a half hours more to Soraypampa. Anyway our camp is going be at Soraypampa. Sleeping tents will be ready and we will have a warm delicious dinner in the evening.

DAY 12: SALKANTAY DAY 2

Today early in the morning we will wake you up with the coca tea. Around 6:00 we will have a nutritious breakfast around 7:00 am we will start the hardest day of the whole Salkantay trek; we will be walking up to the highest point of the trek. After 6 kilometers uphill through the magnificent scenery of Rocky Mountains and enjoying the view of Salkantay mount. We reach the top of the trek. We will appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level) which is known as the second highest mountain of the Cusco region. After 2 hours downhill around 1:00 p.m. we will have our delicious Peruvian lunch, in the area called Huayracmachay. Then we continue our hike to Chaullay approximately 3 hours of downhill we will get to our camp in Chaullay = 2900 masl Where we will have the sleeping tents ready. Around 7: 00 pm we will have dinner to recover energy from the trek.

  • Distance Travelled: 20km to Chaullay

DAY 13: SALKANTAY DAY 3

Around 7:30 am; we will start our trek to La Playa through the Santa Teresa valley. We will hike 6 hours approximately during the hike will see: water fall, orchids, coffee, banana, avocado plantations and we will taste the famous passion fruit or granadilla and also we will see a village call Colpapampa also call the “forest cloudy brow” where waterfalls, thermal hot springs, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds can be observed. If we are lucky, we will be able to see the famous bird called “the Cock of the Rocks”. After lunch at La playa, we will catch a local transportation to Santa Teresa. Where will have an overnight at “cola de mono” campsite. We are the only trekking company allow camping there. In the afternoon we may go to Santa Teresa´s hot spring to enjoy it. Then back at the campsite for happy hours and dinner.

DAY 14: SALKANTAY DAY 4

After of our delicious breakfast we are going to walk approximately 7 hours. Around 8:30 a.m. we start our trek to Colpani village we will have the opportunity to see coca farms, mandarin, orange and yucca. And a lovely view of the Santa Teresa Valley. We follow along the riverside of Vilcanota River until arrive to the Oroya (cable bridge) then we keep going to Hidroelectrica where will have our lunch. After lunch we going to walk along the train track but on the base of Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu Mountain from the way we will see Machu Picchu. After two a half hours hike we will be at Aguas Calientes town: base town of Machu Picchu for overnight in the hotel and dinner at the local restaurant.

DAY 15: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – OLLANTAYTAMBO - CUSCO

Today early in the morning after breakfast at the hotel you will be able to choose between. Walk up to Machu Picchu. Or take bus up to Machu Picchu. Any way we will be the first ones into Machu Picchu to enjoy the sunrise and you will have two a half hours guided tour. Then you will have the free time to explore Machu Picchu by yourselves or if you desire, ascent toward the Huaynapicchu Mountain. Or climb to Machu Picchu montaña. After Machu Picchu you are going back to Aguas Calientes to take a train to Ollantaytambo and from there by bus back to Cusco. The bus drops you off at your hotel in Cusco.

DAY 16: FREE DAY

After breakfast at your hotel, the day is yours to relax after your Salkantay trek.

DAY 17: TRANSFER AND REFUGIO AMAZON ARRIVAL

After breakfast at your hotel, a representative will pick you up to take you to the airport to catch your plane to Puerto Maldonado.

Welcome at Puerto Maldonado Airport, where you will be greeted by a professional English- speaking guide, a specialist in the field of biology, tourism, or an outstanding member of the community. This guide will stay with you for the remainder of your time at Refugio Amazonas, and will be a tremendous asset to your small group, which will be held to ten people. (Note: If you desire a more private tour or need a language other than English, please advise us in advance.)

Today's Itinerary

  • Stop at Company Headquarters, where you will leave any gear not necessary for the next three days in our secure storage facilities.
  • 20 km drive to Tambopata River Port, a communal business in the indigenous community of Infierno
  • Boxed lunch provided
  • 45-minute transfer boat ride to the primary forest private reserve in Posada Amazonas
  • Safety and travel orientation by hotel manager
  • Dinner on hotel grounds
  • Nightly ecotourism lecture conducted by hotel staff
  • Nighttime caiman search

DAY 18: SECOND DAY AT REFUGIO AMAZON

  • Oxbow Lake Wildlife Catamaran Tour, to look for caiman, hoatzin, horned screamers, and the lake's resident family of giant river otters
  • Canopy Tower Tour
  • Lunch
  • Farm visit with charismatic Don Manuel of nearby Condenado, who maintains a crop of local and rare plants
  • Ethnobotanical Tour, to discover the various medicinal uses of the rainforest's native plants
  • Dinner on hotel grounds
  • Nightly conservation lecture

Trip Notes: Just 30 minutes away from your lodging is a 25m-high canopy tower from which you will have incredible vistas of the Tambopata River and the surrounding primary forest of the Tambopata National Reserve. This platform is also an ideal viewing place for canopy flocks, and the occasional toucan, parakeet, or macaw. For your safety, a staircase with banisters has been installed to ensure safe passage to the platform.

DAY 19: THIRD DAY AT REFUGIO AMAZON

  • 15-minute boat ride to trailhead
  • 60-minute walk to parrot clay lick *
  • Bird viewing at clay lick
  • Lunch break
  • Brazil Nut Trail and Camp, a model of sustainability from growth to harvest
  • Mammal clay lick, where guan, deer, and even the elusive peccary (wild pig) visit
  • Dinner on hotel grounds
  • Night hike to look for elusive nocturnal mammals and various species of frogs

*Please note: Clay lick visitation times may vary, but you will always go during a time of peak activity for the many species of parrots and parakeets you will see here.

Trip Notes: At the parrot clay lick, you can expect to see Dusky- headed and Cobalt- winged Parakeets, among others. If we visit at dawn, when the birds are most active, we may also spot Mealy- and Yellow-crowned Amazons, Blue-headed Pionus, Severe Macaw, and Orange-cheeked (Barraband’s) Parrots.

DAY 20: TRANSFER TO LIMA

Breakfast and Transfer After a final early breakfast, a representative will escort you by boat and land to our Company Headquarters to gather your belongings before taking you to the airport for your flight to Lima. Upon your arrival to Lima, a representative will greet you and transport you to your hotel.

At the appointed time, a representative will pick you up from your hotel to transport you to the airport.
